Zamalek secured the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF Super Cup title in thrilling fashion, defeating their fierce rivals Al Ahly 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the Kingdom Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Friday night.
The victory adds a fifth Super Cup trophy to Zamalek’s collection, marking a major milestone for the “White Knights.”
Al Ahly dominated the early stages of the match, eventually taking the lead in the 44th minute. Wessam Abou Ali coolly converted a penalty after a VAR review confirmed Hamza Mathlouthi’s foul on Akram Tawfik. Ali confidently slotted the ball down the center, giving Al Ahly the advantage just before halftime.
Despite falling behind, Zamalek displayed determination in the second half. Their hard work was rewarded in the 77th minute when substitute Naser Mansy, just one minute after coming on, equalized. Mansy connected perfectly with a cross from Omar Gaber, finishing from close range to level the score.
Both teams had chances to win it in the final minutes of regular time, with Al Ahly nearly grabbing a late winner through Rami Rabia, whose header narrowly missed the target.
With no winner in sight after 90 minutes, the match went to a penalty shootout. Al Ahly’s Yahia Attiyat Allah missed a key penalty, and Wessam Abou Ali hit the post, giving Zamalek the edge. Hossam Abdelmaguid sealed the victory for Zamalek, calmly slotting his decisive spot-kick into the bottom left corner, handing the “White Knights” a 4-3 triumph in the shootout.
Zamalek’s Super Cup triumph adds another chapter to their storied rivalry with Al Ahly, making this victory all the sweeter for the Egyptian club.
