Ghanaian cinema has achieved a significant milestone as The Fisherman, produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie of Luu Vision Media, premiered at the prestigious 81st La Biennale Venice Film Festival. Written and directed by Zoey Martinson, this historic entry marked Ghana’s first official selection at the globally renowned festival, where it screened to a sold-out audience and received a standing ovation.
Though screened out of competition, The Fisherman captivated audiences and garnered the esteemed Fellini Medal, awarded by UNESCO’s Enrico Fulchignoni Prize. This prize, now in its 36th year, is one of UNESCO’s highest honors, celebrating films that reflect the organization’s core values of peace and tolerance.
Martinson’s narrative, inspired by her experiences in Keta, tells a compelling story about Ghanaian resilience, community, and coastal livelihoods. The film was shot entirely in Ghana and features a stellar Ghanaian and Nigerian cast, including Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, and Kiki Romi, alongside Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, and Dorothy Konadu. The film’s impressive artistry is reflected in Adam Carboni’s cinematography, Gifty Mawuena Sossavi’s costume design, Douglas Baiden’s production design, and an evocative score by Avi Amon.
Currently, The Fisherman is seeking distribution, inviting audiences to follow its journey on Instagram at The Fisherman Film. With its critical acclaim and cultural richness, The Fisherman establishes a new benchmark for Ghanaian cinema on the world stage, marking a proud moment for its creators and the African film industry.
