Capital City Cup: Two Asante Kotoko players abscond in USA

Two Sudanese players from Asante Kotoko, AbdoelKarem Yagoub and Esmat Abdulhamid, have reportedly gone missing from the team’s hotel in the USA ahead of their scheduled friendly match against Major League Soccer side DC United.

Kotoko, who recently triumphed over Hearts of Oak in the Democracy Cup, was set to face DC United on Saturday, October 12, 2024. This ceremonial game was part of the Ghana Week DC 2024 festivities, organized by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) in collaboration with the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

A contingent of seven players, including Yagoub, Abdulhamid, Samba O’Neil, Emmanuel Antwi, Elvis Kyei Baffour, Camara Mohammed, and Justice Blay, had already traveled to the USA with head coach Dr. Prosper Ogum Narteh. The club had hoped that the rest of the squad would join them after receiving visas.

However, after unsuccessful last-minute attempts to secure the necessary visas, Asante Kotoko announced their withdrawal from the friendly match. A statement released on Thursday confirmed the team’s decision and indicated that the players in the USA were scheduled to return to Ghana on Sunday, October 13.

On Friday night, team officials discovered that Yagoub and Abdulhamid were missing from the hotel. Earlier, the players had requested permission to exchange money, but their request was denied. CCTV footage later revealed that both players had quietly left the hotel without notifying anyone, and their whereabouts remain unknown.

Officials are currently conducting a search in the USA to locate the missing players and ensure their safe return.
