The sale of disposable vapes will be banned in England and Wales starting June next year, the government has confirmed. This move, initially proposed by the previous government, aims to safeguard children’s health and address environmental concerns.
The ban comes in response to a sharp rise in vaping, particularly among young people, with usage in England increasing by over 400% between 2012 and 2023. Disposable vapes, often marketed in small, colorful packages, have been identified as a significant factor behind the surge in youth vaping.
Public health officials argue that the ban will help prevent vapes from reaching vulnerable minors. Though vaping is less harmful than smoking, its long-term effects are still unknown.
In addition to health concerns, disposable vapes pose environmental risks, as they contribute to landfill waste and release harmful chemicals from their batteries. Nearly five million single-use vapes are discarded weekly, causing fires in waste facilities and contributing to pollution.
Vape industry leaders have warned that the ban could drive an increase in illegal sales, while Defra ministers emphasize that it will significantly reduce waste. Wales has aligned with the policy, and other nations, such as Ireland and Belgium, are planning similar measures.
