The Black Queens of Ghana have been drawn to face defending champions South Africa in the group stage of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
The draw for the 15th edition of the CAF TotalEnergies WAFCON took place on Friday, November 22, 2024, at the Mohammed VI Technical Centre in Salé, Morocco.
Ghana, returning to the tournament after a two-edition absence, will compete in Group C, which also includes South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.
Record champions Nigeria have been placed in Group B of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), where they will face Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana. Hosts Morocco, who were finalists in 2022, will compete in Group A against Zambia, Senegal, and DR Congo.
The tournament’s format will see the top two teams from each group progress to the quarterfinals, along with the two best third-placed teams.
For Ghana, the upcoming WAFCON presents an opportunity to secure a FIFA Women’s World Cup qualification for the first time in 18 years. To do so, the Black Queens will need to reach at least the semifinals.
The 2024 WAFCON is scheduled to take place from July 5 to 26, 2025.
