The West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has announced plans to commence a comprehensive cleaning and inspection of its pipeline infrastructure starting Monday, November 25, 2024.
This initiative is part of WAPCo’s routine maintenance schedule, aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP). The exercise forms part of a mandatory five-year maintenance cycle, with the last major inspection carried out in January 2020.
In a statement, WAPCo detailed that the inspection will take place in two phases, covering the pipeline’s full stretch from Itoki in Ogun State, Nigeria, to Takoradi in Ghana’s Western Region.
The first phase, focusing on the onshore segment in Nigeria, will last 10 days. The second phase, scheduled for January 2025, will address the offshore section from Badagry, Lagos State, Nigeria, to Takoradi, Ghana.
During the second phase, there will be a temporary suspension of reverse gas flow from Ghana’s Western Region to Tema. Additionally, critical facilities in Tema, Lomé (Togo), and Cotonou (Benin) will be shut down temporarily.
The inspection aligns with global industry standards and regulatory requirements, ensuring the pipeline’s operational integrity and reliability across the West African sub-region.
WAPCo has assured stakeholders that gas transportation services will largely remain unaffected during the maintenance exercise, thanks to extensive consultations and preparations carried out in advance.
As part of the inspection, the company will also replace sub-sea valves at key points along the pipeline to further strengthen operational safety and efficiency.
