“We await EC’s response” – GFP General Secretary

The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) has successfully completed its nomination process for the 2024 election, despite recent internal disagreements following the death of founder and former flagbearer Akua Donkor. According to George Afful, the party’s General Secretary, they are now awaiting feedback from the Electoral Commission (EC) to proceed with their candidate.

“As General Secretary, I can confirm that we have filed our nomination. Now we await the EC’s response,” Mr. Afful stated during an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story on Tuesday, November 5.

The GFP’s filing comes amid an internal rift, with two factions issuing conflicting directives to the EC. Afful’s formal letter endorsed Philip Kwabena Agyemang, also known as Roman Fada, as the party’s new presidential candidate, aligning with the EC’s requirement to nominate a successor within 10 days as per Article 40(4) of the 1992 Constitution.

However, the party’s National Organiser submitted a different letter, stating that the GFP, after consulting Akua Donkor’s family, had decided to withdraw from the presidential race entirely.

Afful clarified that the GFP had followed Akua Donkor’s final wishes, which included consultations with senior executives and the party’s four parliamentary candidates. This group reached a consensus to nominate Philip Appiah Kubi as the new flagbearer, with Vida Eshong as his running mate.

“We are fulfilling her last instructions. Today, at precisely 1:07 pm, we filed our nomination with the EC,” Afful added, reiterating the party’s commitment to following through on Donkor’s legacy and the 2024 election plans.
