Four new regulations have been introduced by the English Premier League leadership for the 2024–2025 season with the goal of improving the game’s quality for spectators and resolving issues. First, in order to safeguard the health of the players, the amount of extra time—which was noticeably lengthy during the 2023–2024 season and caused apprehension from certain parties—will be shortened. Second, the only people who may speak with referees about misconceptions and officiating are team leaders. If another player does the same, they will be booked. Thirdly, there will be the introduction of a semi-automated offside system that will use technology rather than assisting referees, which has occasionally caused controversy.
Here are the four rules
- Stoppage time will be shorter, only added if goal celebrations exceed 30 seconds.
- Semi-automated offsides will start after September’s international breaks.
- Players who are not captains will be automatically carded if they confront referees.
- Referees will no longer automatically give a yellow card for non-deliberate handballs.
The opening match of the 2024–2025 English Premier League season between Manchester United and Fulham is scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2024. The remaining games will take place on August 17 and August 18, 2024.
