The Coalition of National Zongo Political Groupings has filed a lawsuit against Ghanaian politician Kwame Asare Obeng, also referred to as A-Plus, alleging that he used the death of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale to draw attention from the public. Yahaya Alhassan, the Coalition’s National Chairman, is leading the case, which alleges that A-Plus, a well-known singer and social media blogger from Ghana made offensive remarks in a viral video in which he claimed to know who killed Suale.
Despite several years having passed since Ahmed Suale’s assassination on January 16, 2019, the criminals have not yet been apprehended. Suale’s death devastated the Zongo Muslim community, which is furious that A-Plus is attempting to capitalize on the tragedy for its own benefit. According to the Coalition, A-Plus’s failure to disclose the identities of the accused murderers amounted to encouraging and abetting the crime. The complaint contends that A-Plus’s assertions should be viewed as a mere “political or social media gimmick” meant to capitalize on the sorrow of the Zongo community for financial benefit and public recognition if he is unable to provide the names of the murderers..
As the community continues to grieve Suale’s passing and seek justice, the Coalition feels that such actions are utterly unacceptable. The plaintiffs are requesting that the court order A-Plus to reveal the names of the individuals who killed Suale. In the event that A-Plus divulges the identities of the killers, they also ask the police to grant him sufficient security so that they can be apprehended. The Coalition further requests that, A-Plus face legal repercussions from the court in the event that he disregards these demands.
