A Rocha Ghana, an environmental conservation group, has filed an interlocutory injunction against Samuel A. Jinapor, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources. The suit aims to prevent the Minister and the Forestry Commission from reclassifying Globally Significant Biodiversity Areas (GSBAs) as logging zones.
The legal action, filed on October 10 and reported by *Citinewsroom.com*, seeks an order to bar both the Minister and the Forestry Commission from entering into any transactions or agreements that would grant commercial timber rights within these critical ecological zones.
With a strong legacy of practical conservation efforts, A Rocha Ghana is urging the court to rule that the issuance of Timber Utilization Contracts without Parliamentary approval is unlawful. The organization’s commitment to sustainable management of key habitats is at the heart of the legal challenge.
This move follows a September collaboration with six other civil society organizations, where they collectively announced plans to take legal action against the government over illegal mining activities in forest reserves.
