The three-day #FreeTheCitizens and #StopGalamseyNow demonstration kicked off today, Thursday, October 3, in Accra, aimed at demanding the immediate release of 53 Democracy Hub protesters arrested during an anti-galamsey demonstration last week. The protest also seeks to highlight the severe environmental damage caused by illegal mining activities in the region.
Beginning at Legon, the march progressed through Okponglo Traffic Light, the Airport Traffic Light, the National Service Secretariat, the Electoral Commission Office, and Parliament, ultimately concluding at Independence Square. Protesters plan to submit a petition to the Attorney General requesting the release of the detained activists.
Clad in black, demonstrators carried signs with messages such as “Leaders, You’ve Failed Us,” “Tweeting Alone Won’t Solve the Galamsey Problem,” and “We’re Drinking Death & There’s No One to Save Us.” The Ghana Police Service ensured the march remained peaceful and orderly throughout its course.
