The Accra Circuit Court has rejected an application by Elorm Ababio, also known as Ama Governor, for permission to travel outside the country. On Friday, October 11, nine out of the 52 Democracy Hub protesters appeared in court for the continuation of their case.
During the proceedings, State Attorney Amanda Awadi informed the Accra Circuit Court that the prosecution had filed some disclosures, but had pending ones to submit. She requested an adjournment to allow time for these to be filed.
Ama Governor’s lawyer then requested that her client be allowed to travel out of the jurisdiction between October 13 and 18 for a scheduled engagement. The lawyer also sought for the charge of assault on a public officer to be dismissed.
Additionally, Emmanuel Gyan, the lawyer for the second accused, applied to have charges against his client dropped, arguing that his client was not involved in the protest on the day in question. In response, the prosecution stated they were unaware of these developments, as the applications had not been formally submitted to them.
Presiding Judge Evelyn Asamoah, after considering both sides, ruled that Ama Governor’s legal team had not officially filed their application, and therefore, denied the request for leave. She advised the defense to file the proper application and adjourned the case to October 30.
The judge also instructed the prosecution to submit their witness statements and disclosures before the next hearing. Benjamin Akuffo, who was arrested while visiting the detained protesters, also appeared in court following his bail. The prosecution was again ordered to file their disclosures, and he is scheduled to reappear on October 30.
