As the 2025 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) approaches, 15 teams have already secured their spots in the prestigious tournament, set to be held in Morocco.
Following the results of Matchday 5 on Thursday, six additional nations — Nigeria, Tunisia, South Africa, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea, and Gabon — have joined the growing list of confirmed qualifiers, further solidifying the competition’s lineup.
The list of secured teams includes a mix of established African football giants and emerging nations. Morocco, the host country, automatically qualifies, while Senegal and Algeria also earned their places early due to their strong performances throughout the qualification rounds.
Other powerhouses, such as Egypt and defending champions Côte d’Ivoire, will return to the tournament with their rich histories of success in the competition.
Several teams are making a return to AFCON after a period of absence, including DR Congo, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea, all of whom will be eager to make a mark. Uganda and Gabon, too, are back and poised to challenge for a deep run in the tournament.
For South Africa, this marks a much-anticipated return to AFCON after falling short in previous qualification campaigns.
While 15 teams have been confirmed, the qualification process is not yet over. Matches for Matchday 5 will continue into Friday and Saturday, with Matchday 6 scheduled for next week, which will finalize the remaining spots in the 24-nation field for Morocco 2025.
As the final places are contested, the excitement builds with top African teams and emerging challengers battling for a coveted spot in one of the continent’s most prestigious football tournaments.
