Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa – “We will go to court” – Akosombo Dam spillage

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that his people, who were affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage are prepared to drag the government and VRA to court over refusal to pay promised compensations. The flooding occurred in September 2023 through the opening of the Akosombo and Kpong dams to address associated high-water level flooded over twelve thousand people thereby destroying their homes and sources of income.

For Marikani’s occupants, it was nearly a year after the tragedy, and more than a thousand residents were displaced with limited signs of improvement that has been evidenced by the North Tongu’s District Chief Executive, Osborn Divine Fenu while being grilled by an Ad Hoc parliamentary committee. The remedial measures among them include calling on government to compensate the victims and a call on utilities to reduce tariffs.

As a result of this the Interior Ministry has called on the VRA to do everything as laid down by the law to avoid such occurrences in the future during its operations. The continuation of the public sittings is to discuss the continuation of seeking for permanent of the wrongful effects of the spillage of the dam.
