President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has pledged that the Conduct of Public Officers (CoPO) Bill will be enacted before the conclusion of his presidency. During his address at the Annual Ghana Bar Association Conference held in Kumasi on September 9, President Akufo-Addo assured that the draft bill is advancing through the necessary legislative stages and will be introduced to Parliament in the near future.
“The Conduct of Public Officers Bill has passed the scrutiny of the Cabinet Committee of Government and is now ready for presentation to the full Cabinet, after which it will be forwarded to Parliament. I am extremely hopeful that this will be accomplished before I leave office,” he stated.
His reassurance comes in response to recent criticism from a coalition of CSOs who have expressed frustration over the Cabinet’s delay in approving the bill. In a joint press release on September 4, the coalition criticized the Cabinet’s stance that current laws are adequate and urged for a swift advancement of the CoPO Bill to Parliament.
Addressing these concerns, President Akufo-Addo emphasized his personal commitment to overseeing the bill’s progress, stating that the bill, which has been pending since 2008, is designed to enhance asset and liability declarations, address conflicts of interest, and establish a code of conduct for public officials.
