Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo expressed hope that Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger would eventually rejoin the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after their recent withdrawal. In an interview with FRANCE 24, Akufo-Addo acknowledged the challenges posed by the exit of these nations from the regional bloc, calling it a significant setback for regional stability.
He pointed out that the security situation in the Sahel has deteriorated, especially since the withdrawal of French troops last year, which had been instrumental in maintaining order in the region. The president noted that the military juntas in the three countries seem unwilling to return to civilian rule or democratic governance.
The three nations had earlier announced the formation of the Confederation of Sahel States following their departure from ECOWAS, a move that Akufo-Addo believes further complicates efforts to restore peace and security.
On the domestic front, Akufo-Addo praised Ghana’s recent success in reaching an agreement with its creditors to restructure the nation’s debt. He described the deal as a crucial step forward after enduring years of economic crisis. Despite criticisms from opposition groups about the country’s electoral process and accusations of clamping down on protests, the president dismissed these claims, defending his government’s approach to governance and the democratic process.
