“Commonwealth will flourish under Ayorkor Botchwey” – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo has warmly congratulated Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, on her historic election as Commonwealth Secretary-General.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, October 26, the President praised Botchwey’s commitment to inclusivity and progress, expressing confidence in her ability to lead the Commonwealth with these values at the forefront.

He thanked Commonwealth leaders for supporting Botchwey’s candidacy and emphasized that their endorsement was instrumental in her successful election during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Apia, Samoa.

Akufo-Addo highlighted that Botchwey’s appointment brings great pride to Ghana and enhances the nation’s global standing.

Botchwey, who was elected on Friday, October 25, after a thorough selection process involving candidates from across the Commonwealth, becomes one of the few African leaders to hold this distinguished position. With more than 20 years of diplomatic experience and an impactful term as Ghana’s Foreign Minister, she is well-prepared to bring her vision of unity, equitable growth, and collaboration to the Commonwealth.

President Akufo-Addo shared his pride, stating, “Today, I feel an immense sense of pride and joy in congratulating Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey on her election as the next and 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth. As the first Ghanaian to hold this position, her selection reflects her strong character, dedication to service, and the esteem Ghana holds internationally.”

Reflecting on her career, he added, “For years, I have witnessed her dedicated service to Ghana, Africa, and the world. Her tenure as Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister is a testament to her ability to bridge divides and foster meaningful partnerships.”

In closing, President Akufo-Addo expressed optimism for the Commonwealth’s future under Botchwey’s leadership: “Her vision of inclusivity and progress will undoubtedly inspire the Commonwealth family and lead it toward a future of hope and unity.”
