Alan Kyerematen, the leader and Presidential Candidate of the Afrafranto Alliance, has unveiled a comprehensive plan aimed at transforming healthcare delivery and creating new economic opportunities for health professionals under his Great Transformational Plan (GTP). During a visit to nursing and midwifery students at the Nursing and Midwifery Training College in Sunyani, as well as other health professionals in the Bono Region, Mr. Kyerematen outlined several key initiatives designed to prioritize the welfare of healthcare workers and tackle Ghana’s healthcare challenges.
A central aspect of Kyerematen’s proposal is the restructuring of the Nursing Training Allowance. He criticized the current system, which he described as politically motivated and unsustainable. “The current setup is often manipulated for political gain by both the NDC and NPP. Under my leadership, we will reform the Nursing Training Allowance to make it financially viable and more effective for students in the long run,” he said, garnering a strong response from the audience. Beyond improving the allowance, Kyerematen stressed that ensuring job security for graduates would be a top priority. “It is not enough to just graduate; the real goal is to ensure that every graduate has a job waiting for them,” he emphasized. To tackle this issue, he announced plans for a nationwide rehabilitation and expansion of healthcare facilities, which would create more opportunities for health professionals and reduce unemployment in the sector.
Kyerematen also pledged to enhance the conditions of service for health professionals, recognizing their critical role in society. “You work tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of the nation, and you deserve far better than the current situation,” he stated, prompting applause. He assured the audience that improving the welfare of healthcare workers would be a key focus of his administration.
In addition, Kyerematen introduced the Ghana Skills Export Program, which aims to train health professionals for export to countries facing shortages in the sector. “This policy is a win-win,” he explained. “We will work with nations in need of healthcare workers, and in return, our nurses, doctors, and midwives will have new opportunities abroad, bringing in remittances to boost Ghana’s economy.” He added that the program would offer competitive packages to attract participants, benefiting both healthcare workers and the country.
The candidate also reiterated his commitment to the Health Booth policy, which aims to create 100,000 jobs for health professionals. These health booths, positioned in communities, will offer essential services like blood pressure checks, sugar level monitoring, and cholesterol tests at affordable prices. “The health booths will alleviate pressure on hospitals and bring healthcare closer to the people while allowing health professionals to earn a sustainable income,” Kyerematen said.
Another groundbreaking initiative is the creation of community clinics co-owned and managed by groups of nurses and doctors. While the government will provide initial funding, the clinics will be run independently, empowering healthcare workers to become entrepreneurs in the sector. “We need to involve the private sector to expand access to healthcare and create more opportunities for professionals,” he noted.
As part of his tour in the Bono Region, Kyerematen also paid a courtesy call on the Sunyani Traditional Council. He shared his vision for empowering traditional leaders and emphasized the importance of reviewing the constitution to allow them to play a more active role in local and national governance. The traditional leaders expressed their enthusiasm for his plans and pledged their support.
Kyerematen also met with the clergy in the region, presenting his vision for a more inclusive governance system, which includes a proposal to create a Second Chamber where religious leaders would have a direct role in national decision-making. The clergy endorsed his vision, praying for his success and the continued peace of the nation.
