AFCON 2025Q: Ghana Hosts Angola In Opener At Baba Yara Stadium on Thursday

On Wednesday, September 4, the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 qualifiers officially get underway across the continent. However, Ghana’s trip to Morocco starts the next day. The opening match of the qualifiers is set to take place at Baba Yara Stadium between Ghana and Angola. Under Otto Addo, who rejoins the team for a second time following his 2022 departure, the Black Stars continue their rebuilding project. For the past four games, the former Borussia Dortmund player has been in command.

Ghana has only lost one during that streak—a 2-1 loss to Nigeria in March—while winning two and drawing the other. The victories came against Mali and the Central African Republic in the pivotal 2026 World Cup qualifying matches. All eyes, meanwhile, are now on the AFCON qualifiers, where the team wants to start strong, with an encounter against Angola as the first objective. After playing each other in the AFCON qualifiers for the most recent tournament, which was hosted in Cote d’Ivoire, this will be the third encounter between these two teams in the last two years.

Angola

In their first meeting at Baba Yara Stadium, Antoine Semenyo scored the game’s lone goal against the Palancas Negras. Ghana then held Angola to a 1-1 draw away from home. Ghana defeated Angola 1-0 in the 2010 AFCON before the two teams faced together in the qualifications. Twenty-two players had reported to the Black Stars camp as of Tuesday, when they conducted their first training session at Baba Yara Stadium. Elisha Owusu and Jordan Ayew were the only two players not present for the practice, which included all 22 players. The two players were supposed to arrive later and participate in the team’s final practise on Wednesday before taking vs Angola. Basel center-back Jonas Adjei Adjetey replaced Alexander Djiku, who had been absent from the squad due to an injury sustained while playing for Fenerbahce, as previously stated.

Additionally, Forson Amankwah received a last-minute call-up to the team.As their game preparations came to a close, the Palancas Negras contingent traveled to Kumasi on Tuesday and began training there. Salis Abdul Samed’s absence means adjustments to the midfield, and Addo is anticipated to make alterations to his backline with Gideon Mensah and Djiku out of the lineup. The Baba Yara Stadium game will begin at 16:00 GMT.
