A group identifying itself as Eco-conscious Citizens is requesting that Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the member of parliament for Nsawam-Adoagyiri, be taken into custody after he is purportedly found to have admitted to being involved in “galamsey,” or illicit mining. The group, which consists of worried neighbours and environmental activists, has expressed fury over the MP’s alleged confession and is requesting that law enforcement take immediate action.
During an emergency session of parliament in Accra on Tuesday, September 3, the Majority Chief Whip and Nsawam-Adoagyiri MP asserted that the present New Patriotic Party (NPP) government had polluted water bodies less than the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) one. In response to the minority’s worries that the government isn’t doing enough to stop the galamsey threat that has decimated the nation’s forest reserves and waterways, Annoh-Dompreh claimed that a probe would show that the NDC was more responsible for the water pollution that occurred during their administration.
During a Saturday, September 7, 2024 interview, Awula Serwaa, the Coordinator for Eco-Conscious Citizens, stated that Mr. Annoh-Dompreh’s actions showed that duty bearers were indifferent to the threat. She stated that Mr. Annoh-Dompreh ought to be arrested since what he said amounted to an admission of guilt.
