Thousands Protest Delay in Anti-Gay Bill Approval

On Tuesday, October 8, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to voice their frustration over the prolonged delay in the approval of the anti-gay bill, formally known as the Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill. The protest, led by advocates of the legislation, drew a diverse crowd, including activists, community leaders, and concerned citizens, all united in their call for immediate legislative action.

The protest aims to pressure President Akufo-Addo to swiftly assent to the Anti-Gay Bill, which has been pending since Parliament passed it on February 28. The delay has been exacerbated by a Supreme Court ruling on July 17, which postponed judgments on anti-gay cases until all related legal matters are resolved.

In an interview, Samuel Nartey George, the bill’s lead advocate and Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, emphasized that the Chief Justice has the authority to expedite the resolution of the matter.

George criticized the current pace of legal proceedings, arguing that prolonged delays compromise the effectiveness of the justice system. He urged the Chief Justice to take action to ensure that justice is delivered efficiently.
