The 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) wrapped up in Accra, Ghana, on October 27, 2024. During the assembly, Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, recognized for his extensive experience and commitment to democratic values, was re-elected as Chair, underscoring a strong endorsement of his leadership by African legislative heads.
The two-day event brought together representatives focused on advancing Africa’s legislative agenda. Delegates adopted a new CoSPAL constitution and held elections, reaffirming Ghana’s Speaker as Chair. He will be supported by five regional Vice-Chairs and a Secretary-General, with each leader set to play a key role in CoSPAL’s ongoing mission.
On the final day, discussions centered around updates to the CoSPAL Secretariat, the Host Country Agreement, and administrative matters like membership dues. Delegates also explored strengthening CoSPAL’s engagement with the African Union and other inter-parliamentary organizations to increase its impact on the continent.
The assembly concluded with a communique outlining objectives for the upcoming year and setting the stage for further collaborative efforts to enhance legislative progress across Africa.
