The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced plans to demonstrate against the Electoral Commission (EC) if it agrees to the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s request for a forensic audit of the provisional voters’ register. NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Koduah criticized the NDC’s call for an audit as hypocritical, lacking substantial evidence.
On September 17, 2024, the NDC held a nationwide demonstration urging the EC to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register for the upcoming elections, citing irregularities and unauthorized manipulations, particularly in Pusiga in the Upper East region. The NDC has given the EC a week to respond to their petition.
While the EC is currently reviewing the NDC’s request, the NPP expressed confusion over the NDC’s failure to provide specific evidence of discrepancies to the election management body. Koduah warned that if the EC capitulates to the NDC’s demands, NPP supporters nationwide will take to the streets in protest.
He referenced a 2015 commitment from the EC to manage its constitutional duties independently, questioning what has changed if the request is granted. In 2015, the NPP-affiliated “Let My Vote Count Alliance” also protested similar demands, with then-NDC General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, now party chairman, openly opposing the committee set up to evaluate their petition.
Koduah urged civil society organizations to hold political parties accountable when they overstep their boundaries and interfere with the EC’s constitutionally mandated responsibilities. Meanwhile, the NPP has identified discrepancies in the voter register and plans to petition the EC next week for resolution through its internal mechanisms.
