Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, is set to hold a media briefing to address recent parliamentary developments and broader issues shaping Ghana’s democratic framework. This session aims to tackle critical topics concerning Ghana’s parliamentary democracy, especially in light of recent events with significant political impact.
The media briefing will be held on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at 2:00 pm, in the Justice D.F. Annan Auditorium, Job 600, at Parliament House. Media representatives are encouraged to attend, as Speaker Bagbin is expected to offer insights into key challenges currently facing Ghana’s democracy.
This briefing follows a recent Supreme Court decision, which denied the Speaker’s application to halt enforcement of a ruling regarding four parliamentary seats he had previously declared vacant. The court’s decision, which has generated considerable political discussion, maintains that these seats should remain vacant for the time being.
The Speaker’s initial decision to declare the seats vacant had set off a series of legal disputes, culminating in the Supreme Court’s recent judgment, highlighting the tension between parliamentary authority and judicial intervention.
In his upcoming address, Speaker Bagbin is expected to clarify Parliament’s stance on the matter and outline potential next steps for addressing these pressing concerns.
