The National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO) reports that there are insufficient relief materials on hand to help every person who may be forced to from their home due to the Bagre Dam disaster in Burkina Faso. This follows the announcement made by SONABEL, the Burkinabe power utility body that the exercise will begin on Monday, August 19.
The document, which has since gone viral on social media, asked that those living in flood-prone areas be moved. The director of the West Gonja Municipal NADMO, Adam Bavug, confirmed to journalists that although efforts are being made to relocate people from the red zones, his organization does not have enough relief supplies to care for everyone who is expected to be affected.
Peasant farmers in the Upper East, meantime, have stated that they are preparing to step up campaigns to raise awareness of crop loss for many of their peers who would suffer significant crop losses as a result of floods caused by the potential Bare Dam disaster. Eziekel Atanga Azure, the organizer of the Peasant Farmers Association in Bawku West, asserts that the group has chosen to take matters into their own hands because their repeated calls for government action have been futile.
