The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for an immediate halt to the printing of ballot papers for the upcoming December elections until all outstanding issues related to the credibility of the voters’ register are addressed.
Speaking to the press in Ho on October 10, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, raised concerns over the Electoral Commission’s decision to move forward with printing the ballot papers despite the register not yet being certified.
He pointed out that during the last televised Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, the Electoral Commission acknowledged several vulnerabilities in their system, including errors in the transfer of voters, which the Commission had promised to correct. However, these issues remain unresolved, and the process of rectifying them is still incomplete
“When the Electoral Commission promised to clean the register and make it available for corrections, we were initially cautious, but allowed them the chance to address these mistakes,” Asiedu Nketia stated. “Now, it seems that the opportunity given to them to rectify these errors is being misused.”
The NDC Chairman argued that the planned printing of ballot papers—set for Friday—while issues surrounding the register remain unresolved, raises serious concerns about the transparency and fairness of the upcoming elections. He suggested that the Electoral Commission might be deliberately working to skew the results of the December 7 elections.
Asiedu Nketia also appealed to civil society organizations (CSOs) and other stakeholders who are committed to free, fair, and transparent elections to put pressure on the Electoral Commission to adhere strictly to constitutional procedures.
