BoG: Uncirculated banknotes part of established agreement with Liberia’s Central Bank

Allegations about the movement of uncirculated banknotes received on behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia have been explained by the Bank of Ghana (BoG). On behalf of the Central Bank of Liberia, the BoG allegedly received uncirculated banknotes, according to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the MP for North Tongu.

But the Bank of Germany clarified in a statement dated August 28, 2024, that the disputed uncirculated banknotes are a part of an established agreement between the two central banks. As soon as all logistical plans, including booked flights, are completed, the uncirculated banknotes will be re-exported to the Central Bank of Liberia, the BoG guaranteed.

Ablakwa’s attempts to spread such “sensitive procedural and administrative clearance letter involving another sovereign nation in a bid to misinform and disinform the public” were deemed “unfortunate” by the Bank of Ghana. “CBL and the Bank of Ghana (BoG) have long standing Cash Custody Agreement executed for the BoG to provide overnight custody for CBL imported cash when shipped from London by Travelex Currency, which is an international currency shipment company,” the Central Bank of Liberia further confirmed in a related statement.
