During a pre-campaign rally in Pittsburgh on October 10, former President Barack Obama called on Black Americans to rally behind Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign. He highlighted a noticeable lack of enthusiasm among Black voters compared to the fervor seen during his own campaigns in 2008 and 2012.
Before attending a rally with Senator Robert P. Casey Jr., Obama stopped by a local campaign office, where he delivered a heartfelt message specifically aimed at Black men. He voiced concern about their reluctance to fully support the vice president, as reported by The Washington Post.
“I’ve been hearing from campaigns and communities that we’re not seeing the same energy and turnout in our neighborhoods as we did when I was running,” Obama stated. He emphasized that this disengagement seems particularly pronounced among Black men. “So let me speak directly to you for a moment,” he urged, reinforcing the importance of the upcoming choice in the election.
Obama contrasted Harris’s background with that of former President Donald Trump, saying, “You have someone who grew up like you, who knows your experiences, and understands the struggles, pain, and joy that come from them.” He added, “On the other hand, you have someone who has consistently shown disregard for you and your communities … And you’re thinking about sitting this one out?”
Oprah Winfrey has also lent her support to Harris, hosting a rally in Michigan last month aimed at energizing voters in this critical battleground state. The town hall was live-streamed to reach undecided voters and invigorate Harris’s base, drawing approximately 400 attendees in person, with thousands more participating online via platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
Celebrities including Tracee Ellis Ross, Chris Rock, Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, and Ben Stiller joined remotely through Zoom, contributing their star power to the “Unite for America” event.
