Barbados welcomes 155 additional nurses from Ghana.

Barbados has further bolstered its healthcare workforce with the arrival of 155 nurses from Ghana, who touched down at Grantley Adams International Airport on November 3, 2024.

Ghana’s Deputy Minister of Health, Adelaide Ntim, accompanied the nurses and was warmly received by Barbados’ Minister of Health and Wellness, Senator Dr. The Most Honourable Jerome Walcott, alongside other officials.

This is the third group of Ghanaian nurses to arrive in Barbados under a unique healthcare partnership established in 2020, aimed at tackling Barbados’ nursing shortage. The first cohort of 95 nurses arrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by an additional 120 in 2022. Many of these nurses have since integrated into the Barbadian healthcare system, with some choosing to make the island their permanent home.

Minister Walcott announced that the newly arrived nurses would be assigned to specialized departments at Queen Elizabeth Hospital and various primary care facilities. Their roles will span cardiology, emergency theater, midwifery, psychiatric care, and geriatrics. “We expect these nurses to make a meaningful contribution to improving our healthcare services,” he stated, emphasizing the value of their skills and experience.

Deputy Health Minister Ntim expressed her support for the ongoing collaboration, highlighting Ghana’s abundance of trained nurses, many of whom face limited employment opportunities back home. She commended the previous cohorts for their dedication in Barbados and voiced confidence in the new arrivals, affirming that they too would provide high-quality care.
