The Barcelona Legends are set to face off against the Black Stars Legends in a highly anticipated friendly match at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi. Scheduled for November 10, 2024, this exhibition game was officially confirmed by Barcelona on their club website.
The match will see some of Ghana’s football greats, including the legendary Abedi Pelé, a three-time African Player of the Year (1991, 1992, and 1993) and UEFA Champions League winner with Olympique Marseille, as one of the key figures the Barcelona Legends will take on. The Ghanaian side will also feature former national stars such as Asamoah Gyan, the Black Stars’ all-time leading goal scorer, and Stephen Appiah, the revered captain who led Ghana to their debut FIFA World Cup in 2006.
Albert Ferrer, coach of the Barcelona Legends, is expected to reveal his squad soon. Under his leadership, the team has been on an impressive run, winning all five of their recent fixtures. Ferrer will aim to maintain this unbeaten streak as they head to Kumasi for their fifth match on African soil.
The Barça Legends programme, established in 2016, aims to reconnect the club’s past stars while promoting the global expansion of the Barcelona brand and its values. The team has previously played in Africa, with matches in Mozambique (2017), Morocco (2019), and Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2023). In each of these encounters, the Catalan side emerged victorious.
On the Ghanaian side, the Black Stars Legends will look to bounce back from their last match, a 3-1 defeat against the Members of Parliament of Ghana at the Accra Sports Stadium. As they prepare for this clash in the 45,000-capacity Baba Yara Stadium, the Ghanaian legends will be eager to break Barcelona’s winning streak.
