Police Denies Claims of Assault on Oliver Barker-Vormawor

The Ghana Police Service has denied allegations circulating in the media that they assaulted Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a key figure in recent legal proceedings. In a press release issued on October 20, the Police labeled the accusations as part of a strategy to garner public sympathy. “This is yet another attempt by the accused person and his cohort to court public sympathy. We, therefore, urge the public to disregard it,” the statement read.

Addressing the ongoing legal case, the Police highlighted that Barker-Vormawor was granted bail by the High Court on October 16, 2024. The bail was set at GH¢ 20,000 with two sureties, without justification. However, the Police reported that multiple attempts to fulfill the bail conditions have failed due to the accused’s inability to secure the required sureties.

On October 19, 2024, the Police received intelligence suggesting that Barker-Vormawor intended to compromise the security of other inmates at the Police station. In response, authorities attempted to transfer him to a different cell. Despite several efforts to persuade him, Barker-Vormawor resisted the move. In the process of restraining him, he sustained minor scratches on his right hand, according to the Police. He was immediately taken to a hospital, treated, and discharged.

The Police have reiterated their stance, urging the public to dismiss any claims of misconduct, and assured that the law is being followed in the ongoing case.
