The death toll in the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku has climbed to 16, confirmed by Stephen Asamoah Boateng, Minister of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, during a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. The longstanding dispute between the Kusasi and Mamprusi ethnic groups reignited following the return of a parallel chief to Bawku after his arrest warrant was withdrawn by a court of appeal.
For years, Bawku, a major commercial center in Ghana’s Upper East Region, has been impacted by these chieftaincy conflicts. In December 2022, clashes claimed 18 lives and caused significant property destruction. A recent period of calm was shattered on October 26, 2024, when armed individuals blocked the Bolgatanga-Tamale road, leading to the tragic deaths of eight people.
Minister Asamoah Boateng emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring peace and security in Bawku, urging all stakeholders to avoid politicizing the conflict and discouraged the spread of conspiracy theories, calling for unity and restraint as efforts to restore stability continues.
