A young man named Tahiru Danbala, a local Forex Bureau trader, has tragically lost his life in the latest surge of violence in Bawku, located in Ghana’s Upper East Region. Danbala was reportedly traveling between communities within the conflict zone when he was caught in crossfire, marking the death toll at 17 since last Friday, including seven women.
The long-standing Bawku conflict, which flared up again following the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief previously in exile, has led to violent clashes, road ambushes, and severe disruptions to daily life. Schools and businesses in the area remain closed, with residents fearing for their safety.
In response to the intensifying violence, the Ministry of the Interior has imposed a curfew from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, effective Monday, October 28, 2024. This action followed an emergency meeting led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and National Security officials, who called for increased security measures to stabilize Bawku and protect its residents from further violence.
