The New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has pledged to introduce modern solar-powered fishing canoes to reduce the dependence of Ghanaian fisher folk on premix fuel.
Dr. Bawumia made this commitment during a stakeholder engagement with fisher folks and other community members in Mankesim, as part of his campaign tour through the Central Region. He acknowledged the persistent issues surrounding premix fuel, despite his efforts as Vice President to set up premix automation centers, with three located in the Mfantseman Constituency alone.
Recognizing that these challenges have continued, Dr. Bawumia stressed the need for a sustainable solution and revealed that discussions are underway to transition to solar-powered canoes. This shift would help fisher folk avoid the frequent fuel shortages they currently face.
Backing Bawumia’s vision, the Majority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, praised the NPP government’s contributions to the Central Region, citing key projects such as the construction of landing beaches and sea defense initiatives. He urged voters to evaluate candidates based on their track record of development, rather than regional affiliations.
Ophelia Mensah Hayford, Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, echoed this sentiment, assuring the fisher folk that Dr. Bawumia would deliver on his promises. She encouraged them to vote for him in the upcoming presidential election on December 7 and to support her re-election as MP.
