Bawumia commissions Phase II of Ghana’s first micro hydropower plant in Alavanyo

Vice President and NPP Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated the second phase of Ghana’s first micro-hydropower plant at the Tsatsadu Generating Station in Alavanyo Abenehease, Hohoe Constituency, in the Volta Region. This phase involved adding a 75-kilowatt hydropower turbine to the existing 45-kilowatt system, boosting the plant’s capacity to 120 kilowatts. The project was designed and constructed by engineers from the Bui Power Authority (BPA) and feeds power into the national grid.

During the commissioning, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of renewable energy in reducing electricity costs and laid out his vision for expanding solar energy if elected president. He reiterated his commitment to increasing Ghana’s energy production by adding 2,000 megawatts of solar power, a move he said would reduce electricity costs by 50% within four years and ensure industries have a stable energy supply to support economic growth.

“My confidence has been further boosted today. With the Bui Power Authority, I am certain we can add 2,000 megawatts of solar power to the national grid in my first four years,” he said.

In addition to the plant expansion, Bawumia inaugurated the Tsatsadu Center of Excellence, which will provide hands-on training for tertiary students interested in hydroelectric power. Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, CEO of BPA, acknowledged the efforts of his predecessor, Fred Oware, and former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu, for initiating the project. He added that the BPA would soon start constructing a 3MW hydroelectric plant at Wli Waterfalls to further enhance power supply in the Hohoe area.

Dzamesi also highlighted BPA’s future renewable energy projects, noting that the authority would add 105 megawatts of solar power by November 2024, with 50 MW in Yendi, 50 MW in Bui, and a 5 MW floating solar plant at Bui, the first of its kind in Africa.

Railways Minister and NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, encouraged voters to recognize the government’s efforts in the region and to support Bawumia in the upcoming December 7 elections. He also called on traditional leaders to back Bawumia’s promise to amend the Chieftaincy Act, giving chiefs greater authority to resolve disputes locally.
