Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who serves as Chairman of the Ghana Police Council, has called on the Ghana Police Service to prioritize a peaceful, transparent, and incident-free general election in December.
Dr. Bawumia made these remarks on Wednesday, October 30, while addressing a ceremony to commission 430 newly promoted Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) at the National Police Training School in Accra. He emphasized the critical role of the police in upholding democracy and maintaining public trust, especially during an election year.
Acknowledging the dedication shown by the police in past elections, which has been instrumental in preserving Ghana’s peace and stability, Dr. Bawumia also warned against complacency. He urged the police to ramp up efforts to address ongoing security challenges and heightened political tensions.
“Each election comes with unique demands, but we have full confidence in the professionalism of the police. They play a central role in our elections, and it’s essential for officers to conduct themselves with integrity and responsibility,” he stated.
Dr. Bawumia underscored the importance of neutral, fair, and decisive policing, referencing the recent voter registration and exhibition exercise as an example of commendable conduct by the police, which bolstered public trust ahead of the upcoming election.
“You have set this standard before, and we are counting on you to uphold the highest levels of professionalism as you carry out your duties. The Ghana Police Service is leading the way towards a peaceful and secure election,” he added.
The Vice President also reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing police training, logistical support, and equipment, highlighting that these resources are key to strengthening the service’s capacity to manage both electoral security and general law enforcement effectively.
