Bawumia Promises to Have Not More Than 50 Ministers

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged that if elected president of Ghana, he will choose no more than 50 ministers. Speaking on August 18, 2024, during the NPP 2024 Manifesto Launch in Takoradi, Dr. Bawumia said that one of the main ways he will adopt an effective governance structure is by reducing the number of ministers of state. He promised to carry out economic measures that will support Ghana’s recovering economy, stressing that even if the country’s economy is growing, it is still critical to carry out measures that will result in macroeconomic stability and better economic circumstances.

He said, “Ladies and Gentlemen, we have experienced a major economic crisis and, with your support, weathered the storm. But we are not yet where we want to be. It is, therefore, very important to protect and expand our rebounding economy to attain and sustain macroeconomic stability with low inflation, low interest rates, exchange rate stability, and low budget deficits”. He added that he will implement policies to encourage and stimulate the private sector to play a greater role in the economy. He went on to say that he will put policies in place to support and stimulate the private sector’s increased involvement in the economy.

He explained “The move towards private sector provision of many public services would create fiscal space of at least 3% of GDP annually (GH¢30 billion). This represents a major paradigm shift. Additionally, an efficient system of governance will require even fewer ministers. Therefore, I would have no more than 50 ministers”. He maintained that the NPP Manifesto for 2024 gives priority to issues that the Ghanaian people need, such young employment.
