The police have for now opened an investigation into yet another case of defacing where the statue of the Big Six located at the Airport Roundabout in the Greater Accra Region was attacked. This particular suspect not only sprayed paints on the monument but also vandalized several signposts nearby.
The act was committed on Saturday at 3:00 a.m. According to the eye witnesses, the man was caught in the act of vandalizing the Big Six statue and immediately called the police.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they observed that the monument was very vandalized, and all the statues were toppled down. The pieces of the statue were shattered, and the blocks were scattered around the place; iron rods of the statue were also seen exposed.
The suspect was also said to have damaged some other signposts at the Airport Roundabout in the process of defacing the statue.
It is still not clear what the man was trying to achieve by undertaking the act. Nevertheless, the young man identified as Newwel Gavu is in police custody now and will undergo legal proceedings later. The frustration is that the authorities are still trying to ascertain why this was done to the statue.
