With the first round of voting for the 67th Grammy Awards currently underway, Ghanaian musician Blakk Rasta has submitted his album Salaga Soljah for consideration in the Best Reggae Album category. Notably, Salaga Soljah stands out as the only African reggae album among over 75 submissions in the running for this prestigious nomination.
Other prominent contenders in the Best Reggae Album category include submissions from global reggae icons such as Vybz Kartel with Party With Me, The Wailers’ Evolution, UB40’s UB45, and notable compilations like Jamaica Festival Song 2024 Competition and Celebrating Jamaica 62.
According to the Recording Academy, the Best Reggae Album award recognizes outstanding achievements in reggae music, including subgenres like roots reggae, dancehall, and ska. To qualify for this category, albums must feature over 75% of new reggae recordings. Featured artists, producers, and engineers can only be eligible for nomination if they contributed to more than 50% of the album’s playing time.
Blakk Rasta’s Salaga Soljah is a live-recorded, 20-track album that showcases his versatility, performed in English, French, and several African languages, including Dioula, Dagbani, Hausa, Sissala, Akan, and Gruni. The album also boasts collaborations with international reggae stars such as Anthony B, Tiken Jah Fakoly, and King Ayisoba.
Blakk Rasta is hopeful that a Grammy nomination or win for an African reggae album would highlight the genre’s influence and significance on the African continent. He believes that such recognition in the Best Reggae Album category would pay tribute to the enduring legacy of reggae legends like Bob Marley and The Wailers.
Nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards will be revealed on November 8, 2024, with the main ceremony scheduled for February 2, 2025.
