British High Commissioner Harriet Thompson highlighted the close bond between Ghana and the UK, celebrating their shared democratic values and Ghana’s recent efforts to empower women.
Speaking at the King’s Birthday celebration in Accra, Thompson commended Ghana’s progress on gender equality, particularly the passage of the Affirmative Action and Gender Equality Act, which aims to have women occupy 40% of public offices.
“Ghana made history with the passing of the Affirmative Action and Gender Equality Act, setting an ambitious goal for 40% female representation in public office,” said Ms. Thompson.
She drew a parallel with the UK’s recent progress, noting that women now hold a record 40% of seats in the UK Parliament. “There’s no reason this figure can’t reach 50% or more in the future,” she added, expressing optimism for further advancements.
The Commissioner also voiced her support for Ghana’s female political candidates, wishing them success in the upcoming elections. “In many places, it remains challenging to be a female candidate, and it’s crucial that we all, men and women alike, use our influence to change that,” she stressed.
Ms. Thompson also highlighted the strong economic and educational ties between Ghana and the UK, mentioning UK support for youth development, flood recovery, and environmental sustainability in Ghana. She emphasized that these partnerships are mutually beneficial, noting, “A thriving Ghanaian economy opens up new opportunities for UK-Ghana trade, enabling growth for both countries.”
In closing, she celebrated the resilient partnership between Ghana and the UK. “Our enduring relationship, which both respects our shared history and looks forward, holds the potential to improve lives in both nations,” she remarked, raising a toast to King Charles III and to the continued strength of Ghana-UK relations.
