Why VRA staff don’t support Bui Power Authority merger

The Senior Staff Association of the Volta River Authority (VRA) is against a proposed merger between VRA and the Bui Power Authority (BPA). The workers have learned about a draft bill suggesting this merger, along with combining the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), and creating a new Thermal Power Authority by separating VRA’s thermal plants.

In an interview, Theophilus Tetteh Ahia, the local chairman of the VRA Senior Staff Association, stated that they will use all legal avenues to oppose this “controversial plan.” He believes selling VRA’s thermal power plants would not benefit Ghanaians.

The VRA Senior Staff Association, together with other worker groups, has expressed concerns about the lack of consultation with important stakeholders, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC). They argue that this move could potentially “sell off” crucial national assets to private interests, undermining public welfare.
