The Western Nzema Youth League (WNYL), a youth development and social group, has expressed growing concern over the rising sea levels that are severely affecting residents of Cape Three Points in the Nzema region. The group warns that the encroaching sea poses a real threat to the homes and livelihoods of the local population, jeopardizing their future prospects.
Dr. Patrick Ekye Kwesie, leader of the WNYL, in an interview said the rising sea levels threaten to submerge coastal settlements, potentially displacing families and disrupting the livelihoods of those who depend on fishing and tourism.
In light of this looming threat, Dr. Kwesie called on the government and relevant authorities to take immediate action to mitigate the potential damage. He proposed the restoration of mangroves, which act as natural barriers against rising waters, as well as the promotion of environmental conservation awareness. Additionally, he advocated for investment in infrastructure to protect the region from flooding and safeguard the communities of Cape Three Points.
Dr. Kwesie also emphasized the importance of involving youth in climate change policy discussions, as young people will bear the long-term consequences of environmental degradation.
The WNYL leader’s call highlights the urgent need for inclusive, forward-thinking policies to combat climate change, particularly in vulnerable coastal areas like Cape Three Points.
