The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra, in partnership with the Conference of Major Superiors of Religious, Ghana, and the Catholic Lay Faithful and Professionals, has announced an Environmental Prayer Protest Walk Against Galamsey, scheduled for Friday, October 11, 2024.
The initiative aims to express strong opposition to the devastating effects of illegal mining (galamsey) in Ghana and to advocate for urgent governmental action to protect the environment.
In a press release dated October 4, the organization outlined its specific objectives: raising awareness about the impacts of galamsey, urging the government to declare a state of emergency to halt all mining activities near water bodies, river buffers, and forest reserves to facilitate land recovery, mobilizing Catholics and Ghanaians for immediate action, promoting environmental sustainability, and fostering collaboration among stakeholders to address these pressing issues.
This protest announcement follows recent demonstrations by groups such as Democracy Hub, Concerned Citizens, and a threatened strike by Organised Labour.
