Catholic Archdiocese leads protest walk against galamsey

The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has led a protest march today, October 11, 2024, to raise awareness about the devastating impact of illegal mining, or galamsey, on the environment. The demonstration was preceded by a special “Service of Preparation” at the Holy Spirit Cathedral, where Rev. Father Godwin Fiawoyi, SVD, led prayers asking for divine intervention in the battle against environmental degradation.

Father Fiawoyi urged the faithful and environmental activists in attendance to remain resolute in their fight to protect Ghana’s natural resources. He emphasized the importance of continued advocacy in bringing an end to galamsey, which has severely affected the country’s lands and waterways.

Participants, including members of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” gathered at the Cathedral with placards displaying strong messages calling for an immediate halt to illegal mining operations. The peaceful demonstration was organized with the assistance of the police, who ensured the smooth progression of the march through the streets of Accra.

Emmanuel Wilson Jnr, leader of the “Crusaders Against Galamsey,” reiterated that while the president’s directive for military involvement and collaboration with small-scale miners has offered some temporary relief, a complete ban on mining is necessary to protect the environment in the long term.

This protest is part of ongoing efforts by religious organizations and civil society groups to intensify pressure on authorities and bring greater attention to the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining. Following the service, demonstrators marched peacefully, holding their placards high and continuing their calls for action.
