Ghana tops Africa Aquatic Zone 2 Swimming Championship at Borteyman

Team Ghana made an impressive impact at the 2024 Africa Aquatics Zone 2 Championship, securing a staggering 56 medals in both the junior and senior categories.

Led by standout swimmer Abeiku Jackson, the Ghanaian squad amassed 21 gold, 20 silver, and 15 bronze medals, demonstrating their dominance throughout the competition.

The championship, held at Borteyman, saw remarkable performances across the board, with Harry Stacey emerging as one of the event’s biggest stars. Stacey claimed multiple victories, including gold in the 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke, and 50m freestyle, cementing his status as a rising talent.

Abeiku Jackson also captured gold, further adding to his legacy as one of Ghana’s premier swimmers. Other key contributors to the team’s success included Nubia Adjei, Titus T. Ankra, Abdellah Mercedes Y., Snowden Ivan, and Jada Yankey.

Particularly notable was the performance of 12-year-old Jada Yankey, the youngest competitor in the team, who outshone several senior athletes with her exceptional performances. Yankey is now viewed as a future star and a beacon of hope for Ghanaian female swimming.

Mrs. Farida Alhassan, Treasurer of the Ghana Swimming Association and a member of both African Aquatics and World Aquatics committees, expressed optimism for the future of swimming in Ghana. She praised the athletes’ dedication and hard work, highlighting Ghana’s dream of securing an Olympic gold medal in the future.

Mrs. Alhassan specifically pointed to Jada Yankey as a potential Olympic contender, emphasizing her bright future in the sport and the hope she brings to the next generation of Ghanaian swimmers.
