EC to Forego New CI Ahead of 2024 Elections

Sources within the Electoral Commission (EC) have revealed that the Commission has no plans to introduce a new Constitutional Instrument (CI) in Parliament before the 2024 general elections.  The insider clarified that no discussions have taken place regarding the drafting or submission of any new CI, despite earlier claims from former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

In an interview, Mr. Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu raised concerns, warning that the 2024 elections could be jeopardized if Parliament is not recalled to address a pending CI. He emphasized the importance of the 21 mandatory sitting days required for a CI to mature, noting that time is running out if the CI has not yet been laid.

Earlier last week, Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin also suggested that critical Constitutional Instruments were expected in Parliament, including a CI from the Judiciary to regulate election petitions and a potential CI from the EC for election procedures.

The urgency surrounding the maturation of these instruments has raised questions about whether Parliament will have the time to ensure their passage ahead of the elections.
