Cocoa Carriers Association halts indefinite strike

The Cocoa Carriers Association has called off its indefinite sit-down strike, which commenced on Monday, October 7, following successful discussions with the management of the Cocoa Marketing Company (CMC) and a representative from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD).

Raymond Atanga Abobiga, National Chairman of the Cocoa Carriers Association, confirmed that workers have returned to their posts at depots in Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi after management promised to address their concerns regarding working conditions within a week.

Mr. Abobiga expressed optimism, noting that the workers decided to resume operations after management assured them that their demands, particularly a pay increase, would be revisited.

“We met with our directors and COCOBOD representatives and agreed to resume work while they consider our pay raise. So, we went back to work today [Tuesday, October 8], hopeful for a positive outcome,” he explained.

However, Mr. Abobiga revealed that there was initial confusion when he arrived at work, as he was told not to begin his duties. In response, the workers in Kumasi, in solidarity, stated that they would also stop working if their chairman was not allowed to work. This led to a directive from senior management, instructing him to proceed with his duties.

“Now, everything is back to normal across all depots—Tema, Takoradi, and Kumasi,” he added in an interview with Citi News.
