6 Victims Of Techiman South Electoral Violence To Receive GHC270k As Compensation

Six victims of the violence during the Techiman South election must receive a total of GHC270,000 in compensation, according to a ruling by the Wenchi High Court. The court, headed by Justice Frederick Nawurah, concluded that the 2020 general elections had infringed upon the victims’ rights to life and dignity and therefore there must be a compensation.

On December 8, 2020, violence broke out in Techiman South, leaving eight people dead and numerous others injured. Six victims—Abubakari Iddrisu, Alhassan Nasiru, Aremeyaw Alhassan, Alhassan Abdul-Rahman, and Paul Asue—took legal action, requesting a settlement of 25 million cedis. The complaint was also joined by the father of an eighteen-year-old kid who was slain in the violence.

The plaintive stated that gunfire from government-deployed security personnel during the election was what caused the injuries and deaths. They requested a court statement stating that the murders and injuries were against their fundamental human rights, as guaranteed by several international conventions, Article 15 of the 1992 Constitution, and the rights to life and personal dignity.

Justice Nawurah found that the victims’ rights had been violated and upheld their claims in his ruling. The shooting incident infringed their rights to life and dignity, and the court awarded the reliefs requested. The judge also mandated the prosecution of the gunmen upon their identification and an investigation into the shooting and a compensation paid.
