Residents of Bawku are calling for the immediate removal of a curfew imposed on the town, urging authorities to expedite mediation efforts between conflicting groups to achieve lasting peace.
The curfew, in effect since October 28, was implemented to help control the violent clashes and fatalities that followed the return of Mr. Seidu Abagre, who was controversially installed as the Bawku Naba in February 2023. Enforced daily from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., the restriction has disrupted daily life, frustrating locals who believe it fails to address the underlying causes of the conflict.
In an interview with JoyNews, one resident voiced dissatisfaction with the government’s approach, suggesting that similar measures should also apply in Walewale, which has recently experienced its own violent incidents. “The killings in Bawku are serious, but Walewale has also seen violence. If a curfew is needed here, it should be there as well,” the resident argued.
Others expressed frustration with the heavy security presence, with one resident urging the withdrawal of military forces. “Bawumia and Akufo-Addo should leave us in peace; we don’t need soldiers here,” the resident said.
Another individual added, “We won’t comply with the curfew until the truth comes out. We need justice, not curfews.”
