Black Stars defender Daniel Amartey and Turkish club Besiktas have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, resolving a recent transfer dispute.
In a statement released on Saturday, Besiktas announced, “The contract between our club and professional football player Daniel Amartey has been terminated by mutual agreement.” Amartey, who joined Besiktas in 2023 on a two-year deal, had one year remaining on his contract.
The termination follows reports that Besiktas sought to sell the centre-back, but Amartey reportedly refused to travel for a potential transfer. According to Besiktas spokesperson Huseyin Yucel, Amartey was reportedly only interested in a move to England, despite the transfer window having closed.
Amartey, however, denied the claims, calling them “untrue.”
He has not featured in any matches this season and is now a free agent, able to sign with any club of his choosing.
The 29-year-old was a key part of Leicester City’s Premier League-winning team in the 2015/16 season and has earned 55 caps for Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars.
